Undergraduate Statistics Program Now Taking Applications!

APA’s Advanced Statistical Training in Psychology program is now open for applications! This exceptional opportunity is designed for students who will be undergraduate seniors in the 2008-2009 academic year. It is an ideal way to learn more about statistics at a time when many students are thinking about graduate school. Successful applicants are those who have firm plans to pursue a graduate degree in psychological science.

Up to 20 students will be selected to participate in this intensive, 9-day, hands-on seminar. Featured activities include lectures, SPSS activities, hands-on activities, discussions about graduate school, as well as plenty of fun!

The ASTP targets students who are from traditionally underrepresented groups in psychology. For purposes of this program, the definition of underrepresented groups is intentionally broad, including students who are members of ethnic minority groups, first generation college students, and students who have had to overcome other kinds of social, physical, or economic barriers on the road to academic excellence.

ASTP will take place at the University of Maryland, College Park, July 12 – 20. Housing, meals, instruction, labs, and some social events are covered for all students. Participants will pay a $200 registration fee and provide for their own travel. Financial need should not be a barrier to anyone’s participation. For those with financial need, scholarship support is available for travel as well as for the registration fee.

The deadline for applications is Monday, March 17. Visit www.apa.org/science/astp.html for more information about the program and the application requirements.

I’m getting excited about the presentation…. from the looks of the shared document group one is sitting a high bar and I believe they will do a bang-up job… maybe even a better job than the rest of us will do counting the white t-shirt gang pass the ball ;-)

… I too am praying to the flying spaghetti monster to bring us some snow.

Candles are burning on my pirate alter and I am simmering some marinara.

NGCSU FALL COMMENCEMENT 2007

December 13, 2007

I have no idea why… but I am giving the fall commencement address at NGCSU.

It’s really hard to decide what to say so I fell back on what comes naturally. I’ve stolen remixed almost everything in my speech from the Internet (YouTube, websites devoted to commencements, site that collect quotes…etc.) and I’ve remixed them for me and my audience. I’ve tagged many of them on delicious with the tag, commencement.

I also created a website on my University space for this graduating class (and anyone else that needs it). It’s full of classic stuff to entertain and inspire. Check it out here. I hope to put a copy of my speech there too, It’s still in rough shape right now, as a Google document of course.

The speech will mostly be about collaboration, networking, and the future of communication. I’ve borrowed liberally from the educational technology blogs that I aggregate. Thanks! I hope to give everyone credit during the speech. I got a great lead on a futurist article in the Guardian from Derek’s Blog. I am greatly impressed and inspired by Demo Girl… I can’t get enough of what she has to share.

Mad references go out to Barry Vercoe, Maurice Lévy, Biz Stone, Peter Norvig, and the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

FYI — finishing up fall 2007

November 15, 2007

Hey Kane (and everybody else),

I dropped some old slides in on the nav bar… take a look.

If you’ve been skipping class you missed out on a lot of fun as we worked together on many of the tasks/puzzles/mind torture devices

The calendar to get us through looks like this:

November 15 — Reasoning
November 16 — shared sites are due by noon so that everyone has the weekend to study with them and write excellent reviews before the exam on Tuesday.
November 20 — Exam over our last set of material, chapters 8 & 10
November 27 — Collaborative Exam and get your ind. exam back
November 29 — I’m traveling to DC, use this time to work together on correcting your old exams and preparing for the final.

FINALS
December 6 — 12:45 TTR class meets from 1 - 3 p.m.
December 8 –  2:20 TTR class meets from 1 - 3 p.m.

So we are now covering chapters 4, 5, 6, & 7. The lectures are a little out of order with the material, although we will go over most of it together in class.

We are currently hard at work in the chapter 6 & 7 material. Then we will look at more abstract ways of thinking about memory with chapter 5. We will finish this section by looking at imagery in chapter 4.
