Collaborative exam #1

February 12, 2009

Scholars,

Nice job on the independent tests. I hope you went back and reviewed the material afterwards. Always give your hippocampus a fighting chance. ;-)

Today I will be putting you into groups of three at 8a.m…. when our class/test starts. Work together and learn from each other. This is a closed book / closed note exam, but you will have three brains. By my calculations that’s about 2 and 1/2 brains to many for this task.

I have not released your independent tests yet becasue I want everyone to be equals during this collaborative process. The most poorly prepared participant may be able to explain a concept or two to the best prepared participants.

On Monday I’ll pass these exams back and I encourage you to get back together with your group and find the solutions to answers that evaded all of you. Remember we still have a final exam coming up.

My very favorite module is coming up. I believe we’ll have a lot of fun looking at memory. We’ll be doing lots of phenomenological work so come prepared to participate.

Collaboration workday

February 2, 2009

Cog Scholars,

Since we finished our work together why don’t we make tomorrow a work day for the collaboration folks. All of you know who you are in groups with (check your email). Since this is our first go at it, I think it will be justified and then we’ll have a great presentation/study session on Thursday. Everything should be top notch and groups 1a & 1b will place the bar way up there…

This is not likely to happen for our other groups (mods 2 & 3) so you guys should consider getting together as well. Coffee in the library is always nice.

I’ll be in tomorrow morning to help and solve some problems.

Best, prof_chuck

Better start reading…

January 13, 2009

For our first exam we’ll be covering the following chapters in our text: 1, 2, 3, & 4.

I’ll put up a practice quiz on VISTA after drop/add is over to make sure everyone is enrolled in the class and to make sure your internet connection is solid before exam 1. If you have any doubts about the quality of yoru connection you should take your exam in a computer lab on campus.

This week is perception

September 7, 2008

…and if we get to it, we may start attention. Keep up with the reading and get started on your group work.

It would seem to be a good year for getting high marks in cognition… I think my giving out above average scores on the collaborative media development projects helped several people. I also know that the collaborative testing help. As I look at your test scores, collaboration scores, and final I can see improvement. Take this knowledge and apply it to your other classes. At the least take advantage of the online quizzes that come with most textbooks.

In addition, as I look at the large number of people that earned As… as a group each and everyone of them showed up each and every class period and participated. Having the phenomenological experience with all the tasks we did together in class really improves your ability to think about all the hypothetical constructs and to answer applied and conceptual questions about said constructs.

The grades break down like this: 6 Cs, 7 Bs, and and amazing 8 As.

If anyone is interested in doing any research in the area of cognition, especially memory or learning with technology, come and see me.

Have a good summer, prof_chuck

Hello Cognition Scholars,

I hope everyone had a good break. We are getting back on track this week with Chapter 4. I have your exams graded to give back tomorrow. I believe most of you performed well.

We have a faculty staff softball game on T and Tr this week so I will be running out right at 5, so let’s get in and get started on time.

I have slightly revised the semesters schedule… you can check it here.

Here is the link….

I hope to see everyone this afternoon. I realize that many of you choose not to come to class and learn with me, I only hope you can give your peers more respect. In addition, I hope that they have created a great resource for you and that we can all learn something
