Cog Ch 2: Perception

August 30, 2007

It looks like most of us are getting the hang of commenting. Congratulations on your new skill. Use it often.

This will be the location for us to share websites related to perception. Make your comments below given the outline that follows. You will be familiar with it from chapter 1.

I am also placing more constraints on this sharing exercise. I mentioned this in class, but apparently some of you had already fallen asleep by the time I got around to mentioning this. I apologize in advance for yelling. DO NOT SHARE SITES FROM WIKIPEDIA! The site is fine with me as far as quality is concerned, but you need to put more effort into your discoveries.

    http://sulcus.berkeley.edu/FLM/MS/Physio.Percept.html

This is an excellent site that is drafted by Dr. Walter J. Pierce. This article runs through the neurological, as well as, physiological components involved in perceipion. This site contains EEG scans of brain activity while engaged in acts of perception from a variety of sources including smell, sight, and predator/prey interpretations.

    Tag: Sensory and Perception

Rationale: This ties in directly with chapter two material. It is aptly named and applied.

    Site 2:

    http://content.apa.org/journals/xhp

This is an APA site which contains over 33 journals and studies covering visual, oratory, sound, and perception processing methods of neurological processing. Perception interpretation and and reaction processes are also included herein. This is an EXCELLENT site.

    Tag: Perception Databank/ APA

I tagged this site this way because it is an APA site contained rich information regarding perception.

I found this website to be very useful in helping us understand perception better. There are other sections in the website that show different types of visual perceptions that I thought were helpful.

    Tags: perception, cog3310

I chose “perception” as a tag because that is the topic of chapter two.

This website gives detailed information about transduction in the eye. It gives you all of the parts of the eye and their functions.

    Tags: the eye, cog3310

I chose “the eye” as a tag because transduction involves your eyes.

Brief Title: Human Face Perception and Recognition

Review: This website page is amazing. It tells all the angles of Human Face Perception and Recognition that I know of so far. It is the findings of Alice J. O’Toole, Ph.D., from University of TX at Dallas. There are a number of various sides of the face perception information, suce as variations from a child’s view to the adult view of recognizing faces and their various shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Lots of pictures, diagrams, and information overall. It better helped me understand this part of chapter two which we are reading about for the first test and this is a great link I believe.

The Reasoning Behind My Tags… “ “ ‘s are used to pin point my “tag” words I used.
“Website for Cognitive Cognition Psychology Cog 3310”-These words all are used to reference the class in general so later on I can research for this link if I remember it was for this class.
“Human Face Perception and Recognition Recognize”-All the words I used thinking that it refers to the actual subject it is covering and also the different ways I may type it in later to find the link again if need be.
“University of TX at Dallas”-The name of the school/actual website source for the information of this article.
“Adaptation Pictures Laboratory”-The website has pictures, it’s a laboratory of findings, and it’s got adaptation of the types of techniques used.

Prof. Robertson-for some reason when I tried to post this the first time, I couldn’t send it it said because of the word ‘T.E.X.A.S”…it’s a state, just out of curiousity…why can’t that state be posted on here…I just used ‘TX’ instead…hope it stilll makes since.

Brief Title: Automatic Speech Recognition Techniques

Review: The article on this website refers to the types of techniques used in automatic speech recognition. It introduces and covers new information of certain new technology and techniques that are being used for many fields such as computer science, linguistics, and psychology, of course. Take a look. It’s quite interesting and helpful in learning what speech recognition from chapter two is all about from a real world stance. It helped me put it into view as to what it’s really to be about, used for. Interesting, I think.

The Reasoning Behind My Tags… “ “ ‘s are used to pin point my “tag” words I used.
“Global Security”-name of actual main website.
“Automatic Speech Recognition Techniques”-The title of the article/website that it’s talking about/discussing.
“Website for Psychology 3310 Cognitive Cognition”- These words all are used to reference the class in general so later on I can research for this link if I remember it was for this class.
It talks about both “ISR Isolated” and “CSR Continuous” recognition.
    “Phoneme”-deals with speech.
    “Machine System”-two things they discuss.
“Intelligence-Stated in the area at the top of the page telling that this is related to intelligence…how smart of them ;) .

  11.   Michele Wiesner Says:

Ch 2: Test Knowledge of Perception

    http://www.uni.edu/walsh/jeopardy.html

Review: This site has a jeopardy game pertaining to sensation and perception. This site will also help you if you’re taking Neuroscience. For this class, the category “Perception Processes” is probably most pertinent. Many of the categories ask questions dealing with theories of vision/audition or the physical structures related to these processes.

Tags: sensation perception ch2 cog3310 psychology cognition jeopardy studytool

Rational: The sensation and perception tags are in the title of the website, and perception also deals with the chapter in our text (another tag: ch2). Cog3310 is our assigned tag for websites, and psychology relates to the general subject of the website. Cognition is the title of our class, and jeopardy is the name of the game. I also choose the tag studytool because this is the website’s primary function.

    Ch 2: Prosopagnosia

    http://www.faceblind.org/research/

Review: I was interested in prosopagnosia when we learned about it in class, and I wanted to learn more about it. This website distinguishes between prosopagnosia that is present from birth and prosopagnosia that is acquired through brain damage. It also poses research questions that need to be answered since there is little known about this disorder.

Tags: cog3310 prosopagnosia psychology disorders cognition faceblindness

Rational: Cog3310 is our tag for this class. The second tag (prosopagnosia) pertains to the subject matter of the website. Psychology is the subject for my major, and cognition is the title of this course. I chose the disorders tag to remind myself of the basic concept behind prosopagnosia, another name for which is face blindness (faceblindless).

  12.   Adrienne Shipp Says:

    http://magarinos.com.ar/BiedermanBartosik.htm

This is a site with an essay about Biedermans recognition-by-components theory as related to Marr’s theory of early visual processing. This is helpful to read when studying the RbC theory and probably shouldn’t be used for paper writing.

    Tags: cog3310 recognition-by-components-theory Biederman

Rationale: I used the class tag, and recognition-by-components-theory for those looking for more information, and I also used Biederman for those looking at general information about him.

    Site 2: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4086319.stm

I was fascinated when discussing agnosia during class so I found this website that defines agnosia which would be good for reviewing but also gives a couple case studies of people that have been diagnosed with agnosia that might make it a little easier to understand. This website also has a links and references button that lists several other websites that had good information about agnosia and the different types as well.

Tags: cog3310, agnosia, perception, ventral stream, psychology, case studies

Rational for tags: cog3310 for class, agnosia because that is what the webpage is about, psychology and perception because agnosia could fall under those categories, ventral stream because this is where damage occurs in order to have agnosia, and case studies so I know there are actual examples of this disorder I can review.

  31.   Ashley Bogue Says:

    Site 2 Review:
This site contains about 40 different perception puzzles. They are like the ones we did in class. They demonstrate what the book says that sometimes the context of an object or images can distort our perception; that what we see is not always what an object really looks like. Some are really neat like when words seem to disappear off the page but they really don’t (scary huh!)

Tags: cog3310, visual perception, illusions, perception puzzles, psychology

Rational for tags: cog3310 for class, visual perception because that is what the images and objects are dealing with, illusions and perception puzzles because thats how I would describe what these images on the webpage are, and psychology because it’s a broad category that I could look under incase I ever forget the other tags I used!

We learned about categorical perception in class and how stimuli are placed into distinct categories. The differentiation and failure to classify stimuli into different categories really intrigued me, so I did a little more research. I found a rather lengthy article that go pretty in-depth into the theory and processing behind categorical perception. The article goes into the relationship between cognition and perception and then relates it to speech and top down processing. This is a good resource for understanding the basics but as the article progresses it went a little over my head with the psychophysics. Other than that small section, the article is a good resource for class and even further academic use. I recommend this just for further understanding as it helped me.

I loved the Change Blindness demonstrations stuff in class (even though I could never see the change)! I researched and found an article that explains how change blindness works in the brain. The relationship (or lack of) between change blindness and amnesia is explored. The entire concept of change blindness fascinated me and this article is great in its explanation. It is scientific in nature but gives a lot of information.

Tag Rational: I used cog3310, cognition, and perception as they are required and obvious tags for finding the information in the future. I used ChangeBlindness, Brain, and Entertainment as they not only describe the article and will help find in the future but because these tags help pinpoint the specifics of the article.

This website is nice because it covers informationn about how perception and everything we’ve been talking about in class applies to real-world problems. It has tons of links that will take you to specific topics within the broad ‘human factors’ introduction page.

human factors accidents cognition perception machines links real-world applications visual errors statustics exploration cog3310 … saved by 2 other people …

These are mostly keywords found throughout the introduction page….human factors, errors, accidents, (misspelled statistics), as well as general keywords about the class and such. I included ‘exploration’ as well because the ability to delve rather deep into the topic if you so chose.

This site is nice becuase it is basically a list of abstracts from publication articles from Yale’s Cognition and Perception lab. It includes very up-to-date and scientifically important summaries of studies and research findings. Could be a great starting place for a term paper if you could get your hands on the articles themselves but the abstracts give basic information and findings, making for an intersting (somewhat difficult to read) site for current information.

abstracts publication summaries studies University Yale laboratory overview findings cognition cog3310 new 2007 research

Again, most of these are general class tags but I did include some that highlight this site as a list of abstracts and summaries of research. I also included where the abstracts came from (Yale) and the year, emphasizing that the information is current.

Again, this is another website (with a lot of info on perception) that visually helps you interact with perception. It has a couple of interaction exercises to help you understand certain concepts of processing.

    cog3310 visualization perception prof_chuck

I chose visualization for a tag because this cite deals mostly with the user interacting by watching exercises off the screen. Perception is tagged because this cite is testing your abilities to perceive certain aspects. cog3310 and prof_chuck are for the class.

It is missing it’s pictures and may look unorganized,,,,but it is quite an interesting read. Mostly focus on the portion: Vision: A New Perspective. This talks of how our brain perceives what we see. Read on to determine what pops out most for the majority of people.
