Description: An Overview of Human Memory

    URL: http://www.cc.gatech.edu/classes/cs6751_97_winter/Topics/human-cap/memory.html

Overview: This is a very good summary site that touches on memory related topics. It covers sensory memory, short term memory, and long term memory. It also provides some Gestalt theories and challenges some on the basis of validity. It goes on to explore echoic, haptic, and iconic memory and information retrieval as well.
I would consider using this article in a presentation because it is concise, well written, and very informative.

Site #1: Types of Memory Problems- Epilepsy

    URL: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/memory_problems.html

    Description:
My mother in law has severe epilepsy and this site is pretty interesting because it explains memory impairment as it applies to the disorder. It’s a real life application of what we are studying. People with epilepsy run into problems not only with attention, but with encoding, storage, and retrieval of information as well; each step is affected. Just an interesting read if you have time…probably not so useful when studying or writing a paper, but practical for leisurely reading.

Tags: epilepsy memory impairments disability problems attention encoding storage retrieval cog3310 cognition Barr NYU 2007

Reasoning: These tags are topics covered and key words applicable to the article as well as where the article was written (NYU), who wrote it (Barr) and the year. Cognition, of course, was included as well for our class.

    Site #2: Short Term Memory

    URL: http://home.sandiego.edu/~taylor/stm.html

    Description:
This site is a handy study guide for an upcoming test or just to outline and organize the information about short term memory for us. It’s somewhat shallow with the information, but it gets the basics across. It goes through various early studies and experiments as well as some major theories that have been developed; briefly explaining working memory, why we forget, scanning, and memory span concepts. I would not recommend using this for anything other than studying/organizing notes for yourself.

Review: This article makes an interesting comparison between the human brain and a computer regarding “bytes” of memory storage. Review: This site provides an article about Flashbulb memories. Basically, this article provides evidence for the idea that flashbulb memories are not different types of memories, but that they have strong emotional ties. The article also mentions the medial temporal lobe and its role in strong, emotional memories.

Rational: The cog3310 tag is required. The NGCSU and psychology tags help me separate my “scholarly” sites from recreational ones. The brainstructures and brain tags refer to the content of the article, as do the tags typesofmemory and memory. Test2 tag is for my study tactics.

    Ch 6: Sensory Memory

    http://library.thinkquest.org/26618/en-5.2.2=sensory%20memory.htm

Review: This site provides a quick overview of sensory memory. The most helpful thing about this site is that it provides links to information about other types of memory as well. If you’re looking for a brief description about the different “levels” of memory, this site will be helpful to you. As far as sensory memory goes, this website gives information about its characteristics, the basics as far research in sensory memory goes and what we need to do with information in sensory memory in order to retain it.

Tags: cog3310 memory psychology typesofmemory test2 sensorymemory

Rational: Once again, cog3310 tag is a necessary tag. Test2, psychology and memory aid me in the identification of sites for test review. Also, typesofmemory and sensory memory tags provide information about the content of the website.

It is good when just getting started on learning about memory. It seems to be a little oversimplified, but it really helps me to understand memory better. Positive Priming

I really like this article. In trying to maintain an optimistic attitude and environment, positive priming is muy importante. A certain color (yellow) and some positive young-defining words have great importance for the people within this article. Priming is an important mechanism for encoding memory, and being positive about it is even better! :)

This article is a tad boring and I did not find it to be too useful. It did not really catch my attention or leave me with the feeling I truly gained something from it, but it is an article full of information. I’ll leave it at that. This article speaks mostly of the limitations of memory.

    Site #1: http://ccrg.cs.memphis.edu/tutorial/flash_paper/Working&EpisodicMemory.swf
Review of Site #1: This site is a tutorial of “How Minds Work: Working and Episodic Memory” by a professor at the University of Memphis. It’s rather long, but that’s only because the print and pictures are so large. This tutorial is like an overview of working and episodic memory, complete with color examples – some show extensive networks that map memory. It doesn’t have much detail because the information is given as lists (more like class notes) and not in descriptive sentences. Still, I would recommend it as an overview or guide to learn the basics of working and episodic memory.
    Tags for Site # 1: cog3310 cognitive-psychology working-and-episodic-memory tutorials
Rationale of tags for Site #1: I used the tags cog3310 and cognitive psychology so that it would be easy to find for classmates, working and episodic memory tag so that I would know the topic, and tutorial tag so that I could refer back to that if I needed a demonstration.

    Site #2: http://www.apa.org/monitor/sep05/workout.html
Review of Site #2: This is an article on the apa.org site called “A Workout for Working Memory.” It discusses enhancing and expanding peoples’ working memories that would be helpful for not just everyone, but also people with learning disabilities. The author addresses functional limitations and stretching the limits. Under functional limitations, it briefly gives a little background on working memory and then moves on to recent studies in this area, providing examples of experiments and their results. Under stretching the limits, it focuses on people with ADHD and what research has found in applying memory tasks to these people. At the end of the article, it gives 2 websites with exercises for working memory. I liked this article because it presented ideas about how to improve working memory and also how people with learning disabilities could benefit from memory exercises. It was easy to read and offered insight into recent developments in research of this topic.
