Social Bookmarking: Orientation to the Project
August 30, 2007
Why are we doing this?:
Our social bookmarking project is a new endeavor for me as well as for most of you. I believe that this project will allow us to accomplish two major goals.
One, I believe that at the end of the semester we will have established an excellent collection of information / data / knowledge that will surpass any reader that I might have selected to go along with our text. I also believe that the information will be more beneficial to your education in cognitive psychology than any bibliography or literature review that you might put together by yourself for a term paper. That brings me to the second major goal I want to accomplish this semester.
By working on this collaborative project I want all of us to develop better information literacy skills. I would like for you to be proficient at locating and identifying high quality information. I would also like for everyone to improve their ability to analyze information for relevance and to learn to use it in new ways. Make it your own, take it with you, find it again, share it with people that appreciate it, share it with people that are looking for it.
How will you satisfy this requirement and get your 15%?:
I want you to get a del.icio.us account.
I want you to post your delicous account information “here” as a comment. Tell us your name and your account name that you will be using for this project.
I want you to start tagging all the websites you find interesting and helpful.
For every chapter we go over I will post a request for you to share two of your tagged sites. I’d also like you to review a few of the sites and information that at least one other person shared. Tell us if it is relevant, if it would be appropriate to incorporate it into academic work, or whether it’s junk. (please critique and praise appropriately).
When you share your sites with us I want you to tell us why they are relevant and why we should take the time to read over them. Give us valuable resources and we will do the same for you. (don’t forget to include the URL)
I also want you to share the tags that you used and why you choose those partiular tags. Be sure and tag your sites with cog3310
RUBRIC: follow the directions laid out on the specific assignment page. I will allocate points for a correctly formatted subject line, for the shared sites and your review of them, for your tags and an explaination of why you choose the tags you did, and last but not least, I will award you points for your reviews of your peers work. Every assignment will be worth 10 pts and together will determine 15% of your course grade.
Here are some good reads to help you get started with del.icio.us:

Thanks to Cole Camplese at Penn State (and the Apple Digital Exchange) for sharing this idea.

This is an interesting read. It would also appear somewhat common sense. I would use it as supporting data in a paper to further demonstrate a point.
(I am just trying out the system to see if I am doing this correctly.)

This is a neat website just for fun. I found it interesting that we can see or use things everyday and not pay much attention to the details. This website just gives us examples of how our minds and memory really do work. I thought it would be fun for others to look at this site. I am sharing this also to try this system out! I haven’t tried the bookmarking or tagging out yet! Here goes!
